Happenings

Here is a glimpse at some of the special events that brought excitement, glamor, and revenues to our public spaces.

Bryant Park

  •  Angelito Jusay
    Third Annual Citi Pond Winter Film Festival included screenings of Peter Pan, Singin’ in the Rain, Chicago, and Grease.  
  • In February, the Fountain Terrace was home to the Winter Malaysian Market, offering fare from some of the area’s finest Malaysian restaurants.  
  • Bryant Park hosted the 2013 NYC Kids Food Festival in February. 
  • HBO Bryant Park Film Festival launched in June with a screening of Tootsie. Hester Street Fair and Magnum Ice Cream added to the Monday evening food choices.
  • Accordions Around the World, featuring accordionists placed throughout Bryant Park on Thursday evenings in the summer, was a surprise smash. The series’ highpoint was when 75 accordionists joined together to perform a rousing rendition of ‘New York, New York.’
  • Chris Foote won the first-ever Putting Tournament at The Green, and snagged a $200 driver, courtesy of GolfSmith.
  • The Reading Room’s Word for Word Kids program hosted Comic Con.
  • Three Bryant Park Square Dance events in September drew huge crowds and much media attention. 
  • Orchestra of St. Luke’s held the Manhattan leg of its ‘Subway Series.’
  • Taste of France transformed Bryant Park into a French wonderland for one fantastic weekend in September.
  • In October, Southwest Porch featured performances by up-and-coming country stars as part of ‘Nashville’s New Music in New York,’ courtesy of the Grand Ole Opry and presented by Southwest Airlines.
  • The newly designed Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park opened in November for a four-month run. 

34th Street

  •  Caroline Mardok
    Macy’s Flower Show was held outside on Broadway Boulevard for the second year running. 
  • Paul Pellicoro’s DanceSport brought Live Swing Dance Mondays to Broadway Boulevard for two well-attended sessions, in addition to weekly salsa and Zumba classes.
  • Broadway French Market, produced by Bensidoun USA, was an instant hit. Its success led organizers to add a third market day per week, and to extend its season. 
  • Knicks Fan Fest pumped up sports fanatics at Broadway Boulevard, as the Knicks returned to the playoffs in April.
  • Cornell University’s Big Red Marching Band played tunes on an otherwise gloomy day in November.  
  • Just before Christmas, country mega-star Blake Shelton performed live in Greeley Square as part of JCPenney’s Jingle Mingle.

Chelsea

  • InStyle Essentials Perfect Fit Tour stopped at Chelsea Triangle on the weekend of September 21-22.
  • Norwegian Cruise Lines and NYC: The Official Guide promoted NYC Restaurant Week and Broadway Week at Chelsea Triangle.
  • Sunset Salsa, presented by Talia Castro-Pozo and Latin Mondays at TAJ, moved from Chelsea Triangle to 14th Street Park, and drew record attendance. 
  • Google Geek Street Fair occupied 14th Street Park for one day in July.

BRYANT PARK / 34TH STREET

It was another productive, event-filled, and prosperous year for Bryant Park Corporation, 34th Street Partnership, and Chelsea Improvement Company. This special edition of MidCity News recounts the events, achievements, and people who make our public spaces among the cleanest, safest, and most interesting in the world.

We're always inventing ways to draw in the crowds. Here's a list of new programs, amenities, and features in our public spaces.

Many celebrities made district appearances in 2013 to participate in an event, shoot a video or film, or just to enjoy our public spaces. Here's a list of who was where.

In 2013, we saw more national and international retailers flock to 34th Street, and local NYC icons underwent lavish renovations. Bryant Park received its own bright retail news as well.
