The Rink at Bank of America Winter Village welcomed former Rangers, Devils, and Islanders players on January 21. Brian Leetch, Mike Richter, Dave Maloney, Ken Daneyko, and other NHL legends took to the ice to promote the 2014 Stadium Series.
On Tuesday, January 21, hockey fans gaped as some of the sport’s greatest figures sauntered from the NHL Store on 47th Street to The Rink at Bryant Park. The players laced on their skates, and took to the ice at Bank of America Winter Village.
Rangers legends Brian Leetch, Mike Richter, and Dave Maloney were joined by former Devils Ken Daneyko and Grant Marshall, and Islanders alums Patrick Flatley, Glenn Healy, and Eric Cairns. There were also some lucky kids from Hackensack’s North Jersey Avalanche junior hockey program, and, completing the lineup, former Jets QB (and Rangers fanatic) Boomer Esiason, dressed in Rod Gilbert’s #7 jersey.
Adding to the scene, Rangers announcer Kenny Albert performed as emcee, and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman looked on from the sidelines. The weather, which so many people have complained about lately, was perfectly snowy for the occasion. It no doubt dredged up memories of pick-up games on frozen lakes on the Canadian prairies.
This was the perfect way to get area hockey fans excited for the Stadium Series, in which the Rangers played two games outside, in similar weather, at Yankee Stadium. As this video demonstrates, it’s hard to tell who had more fun: the fans or the players.
