The Kelpies Brings Bit of Scotland to Fountain Terrace

Replicas of monumental Scottish sculptures greet visitors for four weeks.

Last week, just as Analogia, the multi-media installation that presided over the Fountain Terrace for nearly four weeks, came down, the park’s western edge welcomed another large-scale public art installation. Those silvery equine heads you now see on the site are The Kelpies.

The Kelpies at Bryant Park are 1/10 scale replicas of the largest equine sculptures in the world, The Kelpies, created by Scotland's leading public artist Andy Scott. They are located at Falkirk in central Scotland, on the Forth & Clyde Canal as part of The Helix parklands regeneration project. They were brought to the park through cooperation by the Helix Project, City of New York Department of Parks and Recreation, Bryant Park Corporation, and the American-Scottish Foundation. The scaled-down versions at Bryant Park are impressive themselves, but check out the official website to get a sense of the visual impact the original sculptures have looming over the Scottish countryside.

The installation is timed to coincide with Tartan Week in NYC, an annual celebration of all things Scottish. We’re pleased to be part of the proceedings. “Being such a highly frequented public space, the park is a perfect venue to showcase works of art, and we’re happy to help bring a bit of Scottish culture to New York City,” BPC President Dan Biederman told DNAInfo. Mr. Scott agreed. “It’s a fantastic location. They’ll go splendidly there with the library in the backdrop and buildings all around. I think it will be wonderful.” The installation will remain in place until April 22.

Artist Andy Scott will appear at Bryant Park at 3:00pm on Tartan Day, Sunday, April 6, to speak about his work. The American-Scottish Foundation will also host a series of live musical performances at Bryant Park during Tartan Week.
