Professor Tiba teaches Capoeira34 on Wednesdays, 6:30 - 7:30pm.
It’s going to be a fun summer at Broadway Boulevard, as 34th Street Partnership is presenting five different free exercise and dance classes. Dance34, with sessions in Salsa, Swing, and Zumba, are underway, and The Warrior, Jodi DeCrenza’s multi-faceted exercise regimen will debut this week.
Capoeira34, conducted by Professor Tiba of Capoeira Luanda and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, is another new 34th Street program. Professor Tiba has conducted free outdoor classes for the past four years, and will return to Broadway Boulevard for the first time since 2009. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form combining dance, martial arts, and acrobatics.
Capoeira sessions feature musicians playing the Berimbau (a stringed percussion instrument) and the Pandeiro (a hand drum similar to a tambourine) while participants clap their hands to the music. At the end of each class, a Roda (circle) is formed by attendees, while two capoeiristas move to the middle to ‘play’ - i.e., practice the moves they’ve learned in class. Capoeira is a very community oriented activity, and everyone supports, and learns from, each other. Catch a glimpse of experienced capoeiristas in this YouTube video.
The first Capoeira34 session of the season is Wednesday, June 18, 6:30-7:30pm, on Broadway Boulevard between 34th and 35th Streets. It’s free and open to all. Remember to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. Lessons continue each Wednesday through September 17.
