Play chess, checkers, or backgammon under the London Plane trees.
Playing chess in Bryant Park has a long, venerable tradition, and this season we have some great news – you can now play for free. The Chess Area is now staffed by Bryant Park employees, who will assign boards and provide game pieces for no charge. On weekdays, the area is managed by our chess expert Gregory Garrett, newly promoted from the Sanitation Department.
The Bryant Park Chess and Backgammon area is situated adjacent to Bryant Park Games at the 40th Street Plaza. It is staffed 11:00am-7:00pm daily through the summer, but stop by on a weekday if you’d like Mr. Garrett to arrange a match for you, or to receive a free lesson on this game of strategy.
Use professional-quality drawing pencils and brush pens, as well as crayons, stencils, and craft supplies at the new Bryant Park Art Cart amenity. Sketch freehand or work with our Teaching Artist on a guided project.
