The fabulously successful Film Festival, dubbed by the New York Post “the one that got al fresco films rolling,” gets off to a fast start with a screening of Saturday Night Fever on Monday, June 16. John Travolta made the most of his first big-screen starring role in this disco classic, set in Brooklyn in the late 1970s. It’s got everything you remember about the disco era - white suits, big hair, and epic dance sequences, all held together by a fantastic soundtrack featuring the Bee Gees, Yvonne Elliman and other music icons.
That’s just the first of ten classic Hollywood films to be screened this year. The schedule includes: The Mark of Zorro, A Soldier’s Story, Blazing Saddles, Suddenly Last Summer, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Key Largo, The Karate Kid, Lover Come Back, and winds up on a chilling note on August 18 with Stanley Kubrick’s shocker The Shining. Here’s the complete schedule.
Please take note of some important guidelines: the lawn opens at 5:00pm and spots are taken up quickly, so be ready to go. Feel free to spread out your blanket, but please, no plastic tarps – those ruin our lawn. Also, no chairs or tables are allowed on the lawn during the film, because they block the view of the screen. If you need to sit upright, plenty of chairs are available on the perimeter of the lawn. Please remember that all bags are subject to a check by security personnel before you enter the lawn area. If the weather looks iffy on movie night, can call the Film Festival hotline at 212-512-5700 for the latest information, or check @BryantParkNYC updates on Twitter.
Remember, picnics are absolutely encouraged. And if you don’t have time to pack your own, the ’wichcraft kiosks offer high-quality, hand-crafted sandwiches and other movie treats. Call 212-780-0577 or order online to pick up your feast when you get to the park. You can also have a drink and bite to eat at the Southwest Porch or Bryant Park Café, and if you want something sweet, stop by the newly refitted kiosk occupied by our new sponsor Talenti Gelato just south of the lawn.
For the second year, we are pleased to welcome Hester Street Fair to the park during the Film Festival. Hester Street Fair will set up booths on the Fountain Terrace and offer a tantalizing array of ready-to-eat options. It’s open from 4:00-10:00pm, and participating vendors include ’wichcraft, Khao Man Gai NY, Frittering Away Lemonade, Phat Boy Subs, OCONOMI, Dana’s Bakery, and more.
