New color scheme, menu board, window decals, and custom countertop are part of the 40th Street Allee kiosk redesign, led by Senior Urban Designer Julie Ember.
When Talenti Gelato & Sorbetto of Minneapolis decided to open its first pop-up store, they scouted a location where thousands could experience the product in just the right setting. They chose Bryant Park, and the company went to work with our design team to refit the kiosk on the 40th Street Allée. The team’s main task was to create a design that evoked the rich, inviting flavors offered by Talenti, while keeping in line with Bryant Park’s design standards.
The changeover from the kiosk’s previous incarnation (it served grilled cheese and soup during the winter months) entailed a redesign that transformed its look, character, and functionality to best represent the brand. The work involved complete repainting of the exterior and visible interior with new colors; creating a new menu board and decals for the windows; installing a gelato dipping cabinet, a custom countertop with storage below, and additional storage cabinets; and designing a new curved front.
Senior Urban Designer Julie Ember took the lead on the interior and exterior design of the shop, while Marie Asare-Boadi, our new Junior Graphic Designer, designed the menu board. Working with colors and tones suggestive of the chocolates, vanilla, and caramels used by Talenti to create their gelatos, the designers created an evocative look that builds anticipation for customers as they approach to purchase a treat.
The kiosk itself is inviting. The new curved front includes a “happy-spoon” logo, and on the windows are decals with a distinctive Talenti pattern that camouflage the interior, but allow for viewing inside. At the counter, customers can view the six flavors available in scoops, along with two gelato pops, in a freezer case surrounded by a Richlite dark brown counter that was custom-cut to fit snugly around the case and highlight the flavors.
The attractive menu board displays available flavors and is clear and legible for customers waiting in line. The flavor signs can be changed out easily to allow for rotating gelato choices over the course of the summer.
The Talenti Gelato & Sorbetto kiosk on the 40th Street Allée in Bryant Park is now open, offering an enticing selection of scooped gelato and pops. Talenti is open 11:30am-8:00pm daily through October 15, and stays open until 9:00pm on movie nights. Oh yes, and on Tuesdays, from 3:00-4:00pm, it’s Happy Spoons Happy Hour. Everyone is invited to drop by and taste free samples of some of the best gelato in the city, while supplies last.
