Spotlight On: French Market Crafts

Three creative artisans contribute to the diverse offerings at the Broadway French Market. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, shop for handmade clothing and jewelry.

The Broadway French Market, open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, offers a remarkable array of fresh fruits and vegetables, cured meats and cheeses, breads, and fresh-cut flowers. It also hosts three distinguished craft artisans, presenting handmade clothing and jewelry.

Designs by Agi is owned and operated by Agi Anderson, who has been knitting and crocheting since she was a six year-old in Sweden. Ms. Anderson offers whimsical children’s wear embellished with knitted and crocheted animals, tie-dyed wrap tops that are comfortable and fashionable, and much more.

Born in Korea and raised in Hawaii, Juli Ra had a successful career in finance before moving to New York City to attend a French cooking school. She then combined her business acumen and aesthetic vision to begin making beautiful jewelry. Using precious metals and gemstones, Ms. Ra employs unusual techniques, such as crocheting with silver and gold to create original designs that you won’t find anywhere else. She also creates custom, made-to-order pieces.

Dolhathai S. (known as Pooh), owns and operates Past Objects Art & Jewelry.  A truly original artisan who creates jewelry from found objects, Pooh has traveled extensively since leaving her native Thailand. Long fascinated by history, she believes that unearthing buried artifacts opens a window onto the past. Along with her fellow bottle collectors and historians, she digs for old glass in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and D.C. She has perfected a technique of combining found objects and artifacts, old glass, pottery shards, doll parts and vintage jewelry, crafting them into wearable art that carries a sense of history.

The Broadway French Market is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 11:30am-6:00pm, on Broadway Boulevard between 35th & 36th Streets through October 31.
